Annan Athletic skipper Steven Swinglehurst reveals he never wants to leave Galabank

Annan skipper Steven Swinglehurst is gearing up for his testimonial clash this month and told how he never wants to leave the club.

An Annan Legends side will tackle a Back On Side select at Galabank on Sunday, July 31.

Swinglehurst, 29, is now in his 11th year at the Galabankies and told how he has loved every minute.

He said: “I didn’t think when I first came to Annan that I would be here as long as that.

“But after my first couple of years I knew that I loved it here and never wanted to leave.

“If I wanted to chase the money then I would have left but it was never about the money for me and it is something to be proud of and something to show my kids.”

He added: “It will be a long season ahead and, to be honest, we should have gone up last season in the play offs but we didn’t so we have to go for it big time this season.

“That win against Queen of the South last weekend was a massive win for us, especially after going behind so early. But we stuck together and I thought we deserved it.

“I think that is the first time I have been in an Annan team that has beaten Queens in all my years.

“You always want to win derbies.

“I was in and out of the team last year so I went away and got myself really fit and I am ready to go for this league campaign ahead.

“But no one is guaranteed a starting place in this team and we all have to still fight for our places.”
