Anna Wintour turns 70: the Vogue editor's most memorable looks

Anna Wintour is one of the most instantly recognisable faces in fashion and as famous as the megastars she chooses to grace the covers of American Vogue.

This notoriety is in part thanks to her finely tuned signature look of ever present oversized sunglasses, strand-perfect blunt bob and chic, perfectly put-together ensembles.

On November 3, London-born Wintour, the esteemed editor-in-chief of American Vogue, celebrates her 70th birthday.

Wintour has been at the helm of the American publication since 1988 and was also appointed Artistic Director at Condé Nast in 2013 to lend her expertise to other publications under the publisher's umbrella.

The fashion powerhouse was appointed a Dame Commander by the Queen in 2017 - for which she wore a demure blush pink Chanel Couture coat dress to receive the accolade - having been honoured previously with an OBE in 2008.

The magazine maven was born in London to Eleanor Baker and Charles Wintour - who was the editor of the Evening Standard from 1959-1976 and again from 1978-1980.

Educated at the independent North London Collegiate School, Wintour began her fashion career in 1970 when she was hired as an editorial assistant after Harper's Bazaar UK and Queen magazine merged to become Harper's & Queen.

Moving to New York a few years later, she became a junior fashion stylist at Harper's Bazaar US in 1975 before being abruptly fired nine months later. Talking about the experience on the Late Late Show with James Corden, Wintour said: "I think everyone should be fired, it’s character building.

“I worked for American Harper's Bazaar... they fired me. I recommend that you all get fired. It's a great learning experience.”

After brief roles working for magazines including Viva, Savvy and New York, Wintour went to work at American Vogue and became the magazine's first creative director.

In 1985 Wintour took to the helm of British Vogue after Beatrix Miller retired, before returning to New York to take over House & Garden and subsequently taking up the position of editor-in-chief at US Vogue in 1988 and adding artistic director for Condé Nast, Vogue's publisher, to her role in 2013.

Throughout all of this, Wintour's wardrobe has been steadfastly stylish. Over the years, she has favoured a variant of bespoke Chanel - she was famously firm friends with the luxury fashion house's late designer Karl Lagerfeld - along with Alexander McQueen and Marni. On her feet, she tends to lean heavily on a nude pair of Manolo Blahnik heels.

Of course, on her head, she is never without a pair of dark sunglasses, a statement necklace and her now iconic power bob.
