Anna Kendrick Reveals She Escaped A 7-Year Abusive Relationship To Alex Cooper On Call Her Daddy

CONTENT WARNING: This article discusses domestic violence.

Anna Kendrick has bravely opened up about her personal life, sharing that she once had to escape an abusive relationship.

The extremely private actor appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast where she revealed to host Alex Cooper that she’d been in a “very difficult” toxic relationship for seven years but it took the 39-year-old quite some time to realise that what she was experiencing was abusive.

“I was, like, reading all the articles and going, ‘This doesn’t look… like, some of it looks like how they’re describing it, but not completely,” she explained, noting that her experience didn’t align with the typical pattern of abuse.

“It came out of absolutely nowhere. It’s like a frog in boiling water thing where it started slow”.

Reflecting on the difficult time in her life, Kendrick revealed that she often blamed herself, thinking she was to blame for the toxic parts of her relationship.

“I was in a situation where I loved and trusted this person more than I trusted myself. So when that person is telling you that you have a distorted sense of reality and that you are impossible and that all the stuff that you think is going on is not going on, your life gets really confusing really quickly,” she explained.

“I turned my life completely upside down trying to fix whatever was wrong with me.”

The Pitch Perfect star shared that she eventually started to feel like she was the problem, and constantly made to feel like she was antagonising her partner.

“He told me one day I was terrorizing him because I was just crying because I couldn’t pretend that things were fine anymore, and I just started crying,” she recalled.

“And he screamed in my face, ‘You’re terrorising me.’ But it was truly from the place of a person who believed that they were being terrorised.”

The Twilight star told Cooper that throughout the relationship, she sought couples therapy and even her therapist didn’t catch on to the abusive nature of their relationship. Eventually, throughout the sessions, Kendrick and her therapist caught on to the alleged abuse.

“I was in a situation where, at the end, I had the unique experience of finding out that everything I thought was going on was in fact going on,” Kendrick reflected.

“So I had this kind of springboard for feeling and recovery that a lot of people don’t get.”

Shortly after she escaped the relationship, Kendrick went on to star in a film called Alice, Darling which depicted an emotionally abusive relationship.

“I had just gotten out of a relationship that was extremely similar to the movie and I didn’t want anybody to tell me to not do it,” she told Cooper.

Although emotional abuse can follow similar patterns, Kendrick’s didn’t. By the actor sharing her story, hopefully other people in similar situations can pinpoint the signs and seek out help sooner.
