ANGUS MacNeil has urged islanders to apply for a role on CalMac parent company’s board of directors.
The Na h-Eileanan an Iar MP stressed the need for island input on decisions regarding the ferry network.
It comes after it was announced by the Ferguson Marine shipyard on Wednesday that sea trials for the Glen Sannox (below) – one of two much-delayed and over-budget ferries – have been held up due to last-minute changes.
The yard was rescued from collapse in 2019, unmasking extensive issues with the two vessels and sparking two parliamentary inquiries and an Audit Scotland investigation.
Scottish ministers are now looking to appoint a non-executive director to the board of David MacBrayne Limited, which is the parent company of the major subsidiary business, CalMac Ferries, and is owned by the Scottish Government.
In particular, they are looking for candidates with direct knowledge and understanding of the needs and aspirations of rural and island communities.
MacNeil said: “It is of paramount importance that the islands are fully represented when decisions on ferries are made, which have direct consequences for our island communities.
“That is why I would encourage potential candidates from Na h-Eileanan an Iar who have the relevant skills, to apply for this role. This will ensure that decisions made regarding ferries to and from the islands are not made solely by those not living in the islands, or without any knowledge of the needs and aspirations of our communities.”
The deadline for applying to the position is September 1 at 5pm, with a start date on December 1.
