Angus MacNeil suspended by Stephen Flynn after Westminster 'bust up'

Angus MacNeil has had the whip suspended for a week by SNP Wesminster leader Stephen Flynn.

It comes after it was reported that the SNP MP had a bust up with chief whip Brendan O'Hara.

MacNeil, who represents Na h-Eileanan an Iar, publicly clashed with O’Hara in the division lobby at Westminster, according to multiple reports.

MacNeil was seen throwing a bundle of papers across the floor after shouting “you’re a small wee man” at his colleague.

The incident came after O’Hara reportedly wrote to MacNeil on multiple occasions raising concerns about missed votes in the Commons and low parliamentary attendance.

On Tuesday, Mr MacNeil cryptically tweeted about standing up to “bullies”, saying: “General advice – Always stand up to bullies, – esp any abusing their positions – particularly those who scurry around shouting to anyone listening, “I’ll get him, I’ll get him, I WILL get him! – mark my words”

“These are people, who from school, we should get taught to face down.”

The Na h-Eileanan an Iar MP is sometimes seen as a controversial figure in the SNP, often refusing to toe the party line on issues like the route to Scottish independence and, more recently, Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs).

MacNeil told The National: "Stephen has his views and I have mine, but as leader he has his own pressures to balance and I accept the decision he has taken."

It is understood that the suspension only impacts MacNeil’s status within the SNP Westminster group and not his membership of the SNP.

The SNP have been approached for comment.
