Kirkby’s Colin Taylor boosted himself into the Mescar Fisheries all winners grand final later this year with a cracking win on Mistral Lake on Sunday.
Taylor, a long time member of the Mersey Dockers Club and a stalwart of the Mescar scene, took this one in fine form with a winning weight of 75.14.0. Opting for a long pole approach at 14m, Taylor neatly put together a catch of carp to 8lb using corn and pellet from peg 40.
Mescar rod Jimmy Martin, on peg 26, chose a bread tactic and that decision helped him to take second place with a weight of 40.4.0 of mainly carp. Peter Foster, with carp for 36.8.0 using pellet, took third place.
Still at the Downholland Fishery, this year’s final round of the Mersey Dockers Winter League was held on Saturday, but this one on the complex’s Green Lane Ponds.

The first of Andy Molyneux’s fishery dreams, this delightful pond, which holds a huge mixture of species to suit every angler, saw a massive 293lb of fish caught over the six-match series.
That weight was individually boosted however, as Colin Ambrose smashed the magical ‘ton’ mark with a winning 100.12.0 on Saturday.
Ambrose’s bread and ‘dobbing’ approach saw him take maximum points with the win to nudge into fifth overall place in the league standings.
Dave Ball opted for bread, pellet and corn over micros to take carp for 54.0.0 for second place on the day. Jay Richards with 26.12.0 took third place with Ben Lloyd rounding off the frame with a creditable 22.10.0.
Lloyd’s consistency throughout the series framing saw him amass just nine points with a first, two seconds and Saturday’s fourth, which saw him win the overall competition and the club trophy.
Steve Boyd Jnr was a runner-up with 10 points, Gavin Charnock was third with 11 points, Jay Richards fourth with 15 points and again taking the top weight of the series was Colin Ambrose with 16 points.
Still on the club scene, the Alliance were at home again at Chapel Pool.
Kirkby’s Glyn Jones made it a second win in a matter of weeks as he took the day’s honours on a tough day with 28.10.0. In a close call, Everton’s Gary Green took second place with 26.11.0 as Harry Kirkham’s 25.11.0 took third and Steve Cain’s 19.12.0 fourth.
On the broader open scene, where angling has been at its toughest this winter, Carr Mill Dam saw a good field struggle throughout on Sunday, on what was an extremely difficult day on this vast open water at St Helens.
As many will recognise, practice is essential within our game in many ways and given a peg, Billinge rod John Harris made the most of everything he’d put together during a successful pre-run session on Saturday.
Drawing an area he wanted on the day, on peg 82 on the ‘sunnies’, Harris chose a favoured ‘long chuck’ to present a method feeder to successfully win this one. Taking four decent bream to top his skimmers, Harris weighed in a creditable 14.01.0. Underlining a tough day, local St Helens rods Mike Hartley and Steve Mitchel took 4.0.0 and 3.4.0 respectively, for second and third places.
