Angling: Advice to those new on the scene

After touching on one of our region’s angling associations, Newton, last week there were a few enquiries made by readers, who simply wished to be pointed in the right direction to get themselves involved in the match fishing world and joining a club.

With this, the importance of finding the right sort of angling club was a subject that was heavily discussed with my new keen angling enthusiast friends, who were both simply hoping to sensibly break into a club in the hope of seriously taking up match fishing in the future.

My best advice for any newcomer is to take things slowly and gently feel one’s way into match fishing.

Helped along by the alliance shown by new fellow club members, who I’m sure will welcome any opportunity to share their own knowledge, this for me was the best advice I could ever possibly have given.

Backed up as always with the encouraging support and advice from our local tackle dealers, a locality where many apprenticeships will have been carefully refined and knowledge shared.

My final word on this is to simply join a club and learn like we all have done.

So on studying some local results last weekend, here giving an assurance that there is always the added attraction on a variety of venues to be accessed.

Our analysis, although brief, was easily enough to convince my new partners, that getting involved this way was the way forward.

On the club scene, Maghull and Lydiate Angling, who like many others travelled to a different venue that members simply like to enjoy. Last weekend saw them visit the Cunneries where they took positions on Hawk Lake.

This saw Stuart Turton take the top honours with a weight of 38.3.0. Tom Clays was second with 32.5.0 and Paul Wright third with 21.8.0.

Clays (BAS), was successful, winning the open match on Mescar fisheries Marin last Wednesday, with a catch of carp to 8lb on method feeder and corn.

Seriously in form and now a regular on Marin, England veteran Danny Sixsmith from St Helens took second place with 34.10.0.

Wigan’s Gary Taylor made it two on the trot, taking Sunday’s open on Mistral. In this one presenting pellet again using bomb tactics, Taylor put carp to 8lb in the net for a winning 67.2.0.

That weight was good enough to see off Mersey Dockers rod Ian Harris whose maggot approach took a creditable 52.10.

Alliance and Leicester AC headed to Chapel Pool on Sunday, Kirkby’s Glyn Jones took his second win in a matter of weeks as he opted for a corn and worm approach.

With a successful weight of 67.7.0 on the scales to win. Lydiate’s Colin Pellow with 49.10.0 saw off Harry Kirkham with just 1oz splitting them for second and third place. Kirkham weighed 49.9.0.

Finally, experience is always important to break into a club and progress within the fishing world.
