Anger over pothole Nottinghamshire road that has become 'a crime scene'

Neighbours have called for action on a 'horrendous' Nottinghamshire road that has been labelled a 'crime scene' due to the amount of potholes covering it. Some living in Chesterfield Road, Huthwaite, even went as far as to describe the stretch of road as being like 'craters on the moon'.

Alan Lane, who was walking his dog named Honey down Chesterfield Road told Nottinghamshire Live that it’s no exaggeration to describe the road as horrendous. The 71 year old said: “It’s got to be a couple of years - it’s like a row of them.

“There seems to be just the width of the road, about 10 or 20 potholes. Just over the bridge, I know there’s a ban on lorries over seven and a half tons, a weight limit on the bridge. It can damage suspension, crack the windscreen. When you're on a push bike it can puncture your tyres not like a car with suspension. No mercy on a push bike. "

Mr Lane who has lived in the area his whole life, drives and cycles on Chesterfield Road. He added: “If I say horrendous I don’t think I’m over exaggerating. With it being so narrow there is no way to swerve to avoid it. You’ve got to be very careful.”

A resident who wished to remain anonymous told Nottinghamshire Live the road has got worse in the past months. He said: “It’s not just that road, but most roads in Ashfield, potholes are everywhere. They spent £530,000 on a bike lane that no one uses and could have spent that on the potholes.

“My son has had damage, he had damage to his tyres and a bit of bodywork a couple of years ago. It seems to have got worse the last few months, it hasn’t always been that bad. But there’s always been potholes there since last year.”

Emma Holmes, who lives in Sutton in Ashfield says the road, described as looking like a 'crime scene' on one community Facebook page, a ‘mess’. The 42-year-old said: “It’s been like it for a while now. It’s awful, it’s not just one or two potholes it’s a load of them. It looks a mess, the road is awful. To be honest it’s not just here, it’s all over Sutton. I don’t understand how it can get that bad. It’s a whole section of road, it’s just a bit ridiculous really.”

Gary Wood, Nottinghamshire County Council’s Head of Highways and Transport, said: “We are aware of surface deterioration on Chesterfield Road, Huthwaite. It is under consideration for a larger resurfacing scheme in the future and we will be making repairs as required to keep the road safe.

“The new two-way cycle route on High Pavement was delivered as part of £2.18m funding through the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund. This additional grant funding is ringfenced for specific schemes to improve cycling and walking facilities and cannot be used by us for other schemes such as road surfacing.”
