Anger over 'disgusting' dog mess left in Stapleford alleyway

Fed-up residents have shared their concerns over an excessive amount of dog mess being left in an alleyway.

According to local residents, there’s an issue with a large number of dog mess being left down an alley on Cemetery Road, Stapleford. They have said it’s ‘disgusting’ and ‘laziness’ as dog walkers aren’t picking up after their dogs.

Despite a bin and number of signs at the top of the alley dog walkers have left ‘so much on the tiny stretch’ and locals residents think it’s ‘awful’.

Now Broxtowe Borough Council has apologised for any delays in cleaning the alleyway, and said it "will ensure that the alleyway is cleansed as a priority".

55-year-old Simon Woodward said: “Obviously it’s disgusting. I’ve stepped in it before. It was much worse back in the 70s as we didn’t have the signs. The signs definitely help. They deserve to be fined.”

Rebecca Phillips, 33, said: “It’s awful. I don’t understand why it’s so hard for them to pick it up. As a dog owner it’s your responsibility to clean up after your dog. I think it’s disgusting and something needs to be done.”

Local resident on Cemetery Road who wished to remain anonymous said: “It’s selfish, it’s unfair that my kids know to look out for dog poo on the way to school, my boy was actually sick at the sight of it. My little girl has trodden in it, it's just not fair. There’s a poo bin at the top of the alley way so I don’t understand what the problem is.

"They know they can get away with it, they know it’s not being patrolled, they know it’s not being cleaned up - nobody seems to care. It’s not the council's fault, obviously the dog owners fault. I think the people are failing to pick it up and it’s an ongoing problem so there’s so much on that tiny stretch. I think they should respond and get somebody out to clean it.”

Local independent councillor Richard MacRae said: “The thing with dog mess, yes there is a lot and it’s excessive, is nobody can blame the council on that one because the neighbourhood warden do a brilliant job when there is grot spots, that's what we call them, they do out and clear it up.

“Unfortunately it’s something that I get lots of complaints about dog mess. It doesn’t matter about how many signs that the council put up they just ignore them which I think is sad. You can’t blame the youngsters on this one, it's people of all ages and all different generations. A lot of it happens first thing in the morning or late at night people take their dogs out knowing there's nobody around.

“It just comes down to laziness and a lack of pride in where you live. I’ve always said if you’ve got a dog you can afford to buy some bags, there’s lots of bins all over the place. I’m not saying they’re everywhere but you are not going to put a bin on every street corner. If you’re taking your dog out for a walk there’s a possibility that you’re going to go past a bin and if you don’t there’s one in your garden. People need to take more responsibility when they’ve got dogs.

“Again, it’s a small minority spoiling it for the majority and that’s the same for everything. The neighbourhood wardens are only a small team and they have the whole of Broxtowe to look after and they do a really good job doing it.“

Broxtowe Borough Council said: "We apologies for any delays in cleansing the alleyway. We will ensure that the alleyway is cleansed as a priority and that our Neighbourhood Wardens increase their patrols in the area. If someone is witnessed allowing their dogs to foul, appropriate action will be taken, including the issuing of Fixed Penalty Notices."
