Anger in 'quiet' Nottingham estate as cars keyed and tyres slashed overnight

Angry neighbours woke up to find a string of cars on their estate in Sherwood had been targeted by criminals in the early hours. Police are appealing for witness and information after 8 vehicles were either keyed or had their tyres slashed in Berwick Close, part of the Edwards Lane estate.

People living in the area said they were 'shocked' the incidents took place in a relatively quiet estate. At the end of June, people on Berwick Close woke up to the tyres of their cars being slashed. One car had more than one tyre slashed, according to one neighbour.

The incident caused problems such as people not being able to go to work. Now, people are curious about why the incident happened.

John Newton, a 45-year-old caretaker, said: “I had heard about what had happened from a neighbour but there aren’t that many precautions that you can take apart from being vigilant. It’s a shame that that happened to that many people.”

“It seems odd that it was only that road. If someone’s confident to cause damage to eight cars then whoever did it could have easily gone elsewhere and done the same too.”

Gemma Simmons, 35 and a sales assistant, had seen a post about the incident on Berwick Close online. Gemma, who lives near the estate, told Nottinghamshire Live: “I have the steering wheel locked on at all times but there’s not really much you can do to protect the outside of your car. If someone wants to key your car and slash your tyres then most of the time, they can.

“It’s a lovely area around here, it’s usually quiet unless it’s rush hour like most places. Hopefully, those responsible get caught but without CCTV that may be hard.”

Speaking anonymously, one woman on Berwick Close told Nottinghamshire Live: “It was really weird, nothing like that has ever happened before and it was only our street. Tyres aren’t cheap.

“If it was possibly a gang of kids, I’m sure someone would have heard something but it all just seemed very calculating. Two cars on the road were left untouched, everyone else had big gashes in their tyres in the morning.”

Speaking more about the area, the woman went on to say: “It’s usually a lovely, nice and quiet area. Everyone’s friendly, most people have lived here for a while and I’ve never had any problems.”

A police spokesperson said: "Overnight, between Wednesday, June 29 and Thursday June 30, a number of vehicles on Berwick Close, Sherwood
(Edwards Lane Estate) had their tyres damaged.

“If you have any information on who might be responsible or and can help with our investigation/have CCTV, please call 101 quoting incident number 0133_30062022 or get in touch with the Sherwood Beat Team.No further reports have since been reported in the area however if you have also been a victim and have not yet reported it to the police, please call 101 and make us aware."
