Angels' title bid running out of steam

Fierce tussle: Bangkok United's Heberty Fernandes (right) vies with Chonburi's Rachata Moraksa during a Thai League 1 match on Saturday night.

Bangkok United went without a win for the fourth game in a row after a 1-1 draw with 10-man Chonburi on Saturday night, leaving Thai League 1 leaders Buriram United with a comfortable cushion of nine points.

Buriram will start as favourites to further widen the gap at the top this evening when they face 12th-ranked strugglers Nakhon Ratchasima in a northeastern derby.

Bangkok United can also lose their possession of the second spot this evening when third-placed BG Pathum United, who are just one point behind the Angels, travel to 13th-ranked Suphanburi.

Things didn't change much for hosts Chonburi as well as they are also winless in their last four league outings.

Both sides had opportunities to score but went into the breather without any goals being scored.

The Angels were gifted a penalty after 77 minutes which Heberty Fernandes converted with ease.

The Sharks were reduced to 10 men on the pitch in the 83rd minute when Bukkoree Lemdee was sent off but luck favoured the hosts in the dying moments of the match.

Yoo Byung-Soo picked up a long ball from Kritsada Kaman four minutes into added time to fire a sizzling shot which was accidentally guided into his own net by Bangkok United centre-back Everton Goncalves.

In a northeastern derby pitting two promoted sides last night, hosts Nongbua Pitchaya edged Khon Kaen United 1-0.

The winning goal in the 19th minute by Hamilton Soares led to a heated exchange and a pushing match between the players of the two sides which match referee was only able to bring under control by handing a couple of yellow cards.

In another game, hosts Ratchaburi were held to a goalless draw by Police Tero.
