Angel Gomes clarifies social media response to Manchester United treatment of James Garner

Former Manchester United player Angel Gomes has denied intentionally 'liking' a tweet criticising the club's treatment of James Garner after the midfielder joined Everton this summer.

Garner, who spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest, signed a four-year deal with the Toffees, which runs until the summer of 2026. The 21-year-old joined United's academy as an eight-year-old, before progressing through the ranks — eventually making his first-team debut in February 2019 at the age of 17, coming on as a substitute against Crystal Palace.

He helped Forest win promotion to the Premier League last season after Steve Cooper's side were victorious in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final. However, he was deemed surplus to requirements by United boss Erik ten Hag after returning to Old Trafford in the summer.

After Garner's move to Merseyside was confirmed, a number of United fans were quick to suggest that he deserved more of a chance at United.

It also appeared that former United youngster Gomes was dismayed at the fact that his former academy teammate Garner had been sold, with the now Lille man 'liking' a tweet from YouTuber Mark Goldbridge regarding the club's treatment treatment of the midfielder.

However, Gomes has since insisted that he 'did not mean to like the tweet', adding that he will always 'have love' for United and doesn't want to be perceived as bitter.

Writing on Twitter, the 22-year-old said: "I didn’t mean to like the tweet nor do I want to be perceived as looking bitter. I’ll always have love for the club, I have no business commenting about what goes on."

Garner, who has represented England at youth level, making his U21 debut in September 2021, recorded just seven first-team appearances for United, while Gomes registered 10 appearances.
