Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou offered some spiky advice to Scott Robertson as the midfielder nears the Parkead exit door.
Record Sport revealed earlier that the academy graduate would not be offered a new deal at the end of the campaign despite being part of the first-team squad this season but without yet banking any competitive minutes. The 21-year-old then insisted he was relishing the chance to prove Postecoglou wrong and kickstart his career after a series of successful loan spells at English lower league clubs Gillingham, Doncaster and Crewe.
However, Postecoglou was less than pleased with Robertson "calling things himself" over his future at the Scottish Premiership champions. And, when asked what advice he may have given the youngster for future, he replied: "Yeah, okay. I don't know if he should be calling things himself in the papers but anyway.
"Aside from that, Scott is one of these players who have been here for a very long time as a young kid and they all have dreams and aspirations to play for this club. Sometimes circumstance and timing doesn't work out but that doesn't mean they can't have a meaningful career.
"My advice to Scott and all the other young players is that ultimately it's about having everything they've invested in and their families into having a football career, that they see that out. Sometimes it's about opportunity and going to a place you'll play more because once you reach a certain age the next stage of development is from playing."
Callum McGregor is set to return to action while Stephen Welsh and James McCarthy miss out on the return of Scottish Premiership action against Aberdeen. The stars who were at the World Cup will also return to action.
“All our players had a week off, so the ones who didn’t go to the World Cup had a week off after Australia. And the guys who were there – the three mentioned plus Alistair Johnston – once they finished their World Cup commitments, we gave them a week off.
"And that’s plenty. After a week off, they were ready to come back and they’re ready to play.”
