Ange Postecoglou's bullish Celtic words become Australian motivator as his boyhood club take leaf out mentality book

Ange Postecoglou's Celtic words of intent have been used as motivation by the Australian rules football side he grew up supporting.

The 57-year-old has made a name for himself outside of a sport he grew up watching and now finds himself in charge of the Premiership champions, nine points clear at the top of the table and on course for a second league title. He's well aware of the magnitude that carries and has been praised by fans for his no-nonsense assessments on Celtic Park matters.

It's something which has inspired Carlton chief executive Brian Cook, who wants his AFL (Australian Football League) side to embrace being a big fish. That could mean less financial support though, with his team bracing for their annual variable funding distribution to be brought closer to the base amount received by the richest clubs soon. That would mean a yearly cut of $2 million (£1.1m) but Cook looks to one of the club's famous supporters in the Celtic boss for how to turn the situation into a positive.

He told Yahoo: "That's life. We live in an equalised system, which we agree with. The fact that the AFL have been reducing our dividend is a fact of how big our club is, and how passionate our members are and how much they give to us. I was really impressed with Ange Postecoglou at Celtic when they (journalists) asked about how big his club was.

"He basically said, 'We're not ashamed of being a big club'. We aren't either, in fact, if the AFL do take part of our dividend away from us, it's a sign of how well we're going."
