Ange Postecoglou retains Tottenham support - but cup progress important after difficult run

Ange Postecoglou retains the support of Tottenham’s board and chairman Daniel Levy, despite a difficult run of results including Sunday's 4-3 defeat to Chelsea.

Postecoglou's future is not under consideration by the club following one win in seven matches, a sequence which has left Spurs 11th in the Premier League table.

The Spurs board considers it business as usual this week, as the team prepares for Thursday’s visit to Rangers in the Europa League and Sunday's trip to bottom club Southampton, and remain committed to a long-term project under Postecoglou.

The bigger picture is still broadly positive, with Spurs five points from fifth-place - which may be enough for Champions League football next season; in a solid position in the Europa League; and preparing for a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United on December 19.

They also face non-League Tamworth in the FA Cup third round next month.

Postecoglou, though, has acknowledged that he will be under “a lot of scrutiny” if Spurs are mid-table at Christmas, while his situation would become more precarious if his side are beaten at home by United next week and struggle to qualify for the Europa League knockout stage.

Spurs also face leaders Liverpool, fifth-placed Nottingham Forest and struggling Wolves before the turn of the year.

Postecoglou clashed with some travelling fans after last week’s defeat to Bournemouth but sections of the home support sung his name against Chelsea.

Postecoglou's squad has been hit by a series of injuries this season, with Wilson Odobert, Richarlison and Guglielmo Vicario not expected to return until next year.

A seven-match ban for Rodrigo Bentancur and Mikey Moore’s illness has further depleted his options.

Postecoglou has started preparing for January in a series of meetings with technical director Johan Lange and has said the club could be active in the market, depending on the state of his squad going into the window.

Spurs are waiting to discover the extent of a quad injury sustained by vice-captain Cristian Romero against Chelsea, with the Argentine sent for scans on Monday, but hope Micky van de Ven and Brennan Johnson will be fine after also being forced off through camp and illness in the second half.
