Ange Postecoglou makes James Maddison Tottenham request to stop £45m Newcastle transfer plan

Ange Postecoglou has told Tottenham Hotspur chiefs he wants James Maddison this summer, according to reports.

Spurs were one of the clubs linked with the Leicester City midfielder last summer but the Foxes rebuffed all approaches. Newcastle United twice failed to sign Maddison, with their highest bid believed to be in the region of £45million.

Then Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers laughed off the fee but, given Maddison now has one year left on his contract, King Power chiefs are in no position to negotiate. Relegation from the Premier League has only heightened expectation that the 26-year-old will leave.

From a Newcastle stance, they remain interested in Maddison but want assurances that he wants to join the club. Eddie Howe has prioritised keeping an English core to the dressing room while he bolsters his squad for their upcoming Champions League campaign.

But Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano also claims Tottenham are in the hunt. Creativity from midfield proved Spurs’ kryptonite for much of 2022-23, with Rodrigo Bentancur injured since February.

An update from the reporter has suggested new boss Postecoglou is eager to sign Maddison as he aims to revamp Tottenham’s squad. Spurs may be about to find out for the first time whether no European football will limit their pulling power in the transfer market.
