Ange Postecoglou Celtic 'lick our wounds' assessment as Hoops 'fall short' of own high standards

Ange Postecoglou admits Celtic didn't reach the levels they've set this season as he branded the draw with Motherwell as 'disappointing'.

The Hoops went into the game boasting a 100 per cent record at home this season and when Callum McGregor netted the opener from range it looked like it would be a formality for the league leaders to go on and pick up a 17th win at Parkhead this season. However, Kevin van Veen superbly finished for the visitors to draw the game level as Stuart Kettlewell's men joined St Mirren and Rangers as the small band of clubs to stop Celtic taking all three points this season.

All focus now turns to next week's Scottish Cup semi-final showdown with Michael Beale's men at Hampden as Celtic look to take a major step towards a domestic Treble. The winner of the last four clash will face Falkirk or Inverness and be deemed heavy favourites to lift the famous old trophy in the end of season showpiece.

Reflecting on his team and their performance, Postecoglou admitted there was some 'desperation' around the game as he says they need to lick their wounds and move on.

He told BBC Scotland: "Disappointing outcome and the performance wasn’t the level we have been reaching. First half was okay and we scored our goal and had opportunities to get a second but we conceded a really poor goal and from there we still had chances to win it but there was desperation around our game and we couldn’t get it.

"I think we were in control of the game for the whole match but when you concede a goal like we did today it gives the opposition something to defend and an extra bit of energy to defend a bit more desperately and we lacked a bit of composure.

"We created chances we’re normally good at taking but we didn’t today and that’s the game of football. We have to lick our wounds and move on.

"That’s the standards we want to set and we fell short of them and we’re disappointed. The players want this situation and be the team who sets standards and push to new levels. There’s going to be time when you stumble and you just need to go again.

"It’s another little challenge for us. We’ll review it and get back to training and work hard for next week."
