ANGE POSTECOGLOU says that Rangers’ Europa League success has highlighted just how big an achievement it will be by his Celtic team if they win the Premiership this season, given the level of opposition they have had to better in order to claim the title.
The Celtic manager once again congratulated Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and his players after they overcame RB Leipzig on an emotional night at Ibrox to reach the Europa League Final in Seville.
And Postecoglou says their achievement proves just how strong a team his own side have had to overcome if they are indeed to be crowned the best team in the country.
“You know I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it,” Postecoglou said. “At the end of the day, to win a title you have to be better than every club in this country. That is who ends up being champions. So that is what we are going to try and do.
“Rangers’ European success has been well-deserved by them. They’ve had a great run in Europe and are a good side, a very good side. They were champions last year and undefeated for that year. They have done well in all the competitions this year.
“You know, I don’t think that detracts from our achievements - if anything it adds to our achievements if we can become champions. Because for us to become champions then I don’t think anyone can deny we have had to beat some pretty strong opposition.”
If Rangers do go on to defeat Eintracht Frankfurt to lift the Europa League and Celtic win the Premiership title, Scotland will have two representatives in next season’s Champions League.
In terms of the overall image of Scottish football, Postecoglou believes that would be a hugely positive development.
“It could show there are two strong sides in this competition and that both of them will deserve to be in the Champions League on the back of their performances," he said.
"That could reflect well on our league and the game here.”
