Ange Celtic exit chatter leaves pundit baffled as he questions why Parkhead 'king' would take Premier League gamble

Australian pundit Robbie Slater has questioned why Ange Postecoglou would swap Celtic for the English Premier League as he declared him "king" of Parkhead.

Postecoglou is on the brink of leading the Hoops to a Treble this season having already claimed both the Viaplay Cup and Scottish Premiership crown, with only Inverness CT left standing in Celtic's way of a domestic clean sweep in the Scottish Cup Final. The title victory also sets up the club to go straight into the Champions League group stage once again next term, and that has only fuelled rumours swirling about a move away from Celtic Park for Postecoglou.

Pundits in Oz and in England have floated Postecoglou's name with a number of jobs with Chelsea, Tottenham and Leeds United all being mentioned as potential destinations for the 57-year-old. But Slater – who won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers in 1995 – reckons it could be a misstep to take the jump to England's top flight.

Slater told Fox Sports: "Their form has been extraordinary this season. 13 points ahead with four games to go. Aaron Mooy has been reborn at Celtic. He is one of their favourites and has had a fantastic season.

"Ange has won five trophies and he has got one to come in the Scottish Cup final. They will win that, so they will win the Treble. The question for Ange I guess is 'should I stay or should I go?'. He was then pressed on a move to the Premier League, with host Natalie Warner stating West Ham are interested.

Slater went on: "Yes, and I think there will be a lot more. He was chased by a number of EPL clubs during the season but Ange is the king at Celtic.

"It is a great job in itself and it's a massive club. They have qualified now for the Champions League and I think he wants another tilt at that.

"If he goes to the EPL he is not going to get into the Champions League. Let's be honest - 15 managers got sacked. It's easier to remember who actually kept their job rather than those that got sacked in the EPL. Why do you want to go?

'If you don't hit the ground running in the EPL you are going to lose your job. But Ange is someone who backs himself. He had to hit the ground running at Celtic and he has done it."
