Andy White dead: Drummer on first Beatles song dies aged 85

Andy White, a Scottish drummer who played with The Beatles, has passed away aged 85.

His family said he died of a stroke on Monday, according to the BBC.

White played drums on The Beatles’ first single, “Love Me Do” and the B-side, “P.S I Love You”. He also performed with a number of other big acts including Sir Tom Jones and Chuck Berry.

Born in Glasgow in 1930, White began playing drums at the age of 12 and became a session musician aged17.

He travelled to the US in 1958, backing Berry and other acts. “We used some big band arrangements and put a back beat to it to fit in with the rock 'n' roll thing,” he told My Central Jersey. “I got the chance to hear rock 'n' roll in the flesh. That was where I got a good idea about what it was supposed to happen, drumwise.”
