Baffled Andy Walker admits he can't understand why Rangers don't have "millions in the bank" as he pulled up comments from Gio van Bronckhorst following defeat to Ajax.
It was a bruising night for the Ibrox boss as he watched his side struggle to compete with the Dutch champions on their return to the Champions League group stage, with his post match comments over competing with Europe's elite raising some eyebrows. The Dutchman insisted Rangers would struggle to compete at the highest level having not splashed the same financial sums as their rivals.
Despite reaching the group stage, Rangers did not add to their ranks after seeing off PSV Eindhoven as Ridvan Yilmaz remained the final signing of the summer ay Ibrox. The lack of business has left the former Celtic star scratching his head after the likes of Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo have been sold for bumper transfer fees in recent windows, along with the influx of European cash.
Walker told The Go Radio Football Show: "You have a Celtic manager saying you can compete, and I was just surprised to hear Giovanni saying they need hundreds of millions to compete in the Champions League. I think Rangers can do better, and they have done in the last couple of years. Some of their best performances have been reserved for Europe.
"Another thing he said was that 'everyone seems to think we have millions in the bank' and he said they don't. I think quite rightly, 'hang on a minute'. They have sold Patterson, Bassey, Aribo, they have the Europa League money and Champions League money. What is there to spend?
"They other thing was Giovanni van Bronckhorst said he was happy with the squad going into the Champions League, but we don't know. You've got Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent not playing, are the committed?
"It was such a plus for Rangers to get into the Champions League, and they have fallen so far so quickly. We were all surprised when Rangers managed to get into the Champions League, with the money guaranteed, and they didn't strengthen.
"The manager must have wanted another striker. Who knows what is going to happen with Morelos with his attitude, and the manager would have wanted another striker. God forbid you get another injury to Colak."
