Andy Walker demands Celtic respect from Michael Beale as Rangers boss fired pointed reminder after 'wee dig'

Concerned Andy Walker has urged Rangers boss Michael Beale to show respect for Celtic after he called the Scottish champions "the other team".

The Ibrox boss stopped short of name-checking Ange Postecoglou's side ahead of his first competitive game against Hibs, as Gio van Bronckhorst's successor will look to immediately cut the gap on Celtic to six points with the Hoops not returning to action until Saturday when they go up against Aberdeen. When quizzed about overtaking the the league leaders this term, Beale stated that they could only succeed if "the other team" started dropping points.

After blanking their city rivals, former Parkhead star Walker reckons there should be a level of respect between both bosses and dressing rooms in Glasgow. Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, he pointed to the relationship of Postecoglou and former boss Van Bronckhorst following his arrival at Rangers as an example of how the sides should conduct themselves.

He said: "In my time there is a general level of respect between the players. From time to time you get a wee dig at the other, and I think it adds a wee bit of spice. I don't think anything has got out of control.

"There is always a little gentle dig. I think when you say the behaviour of Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ange Postecoglou (there was) total respect for one another.

"I remember back to Billy McNeill being respectful to all managers, and I can remember him having a right good ding-dong with Graeme Souness after the first Old Firm game i played in. The two of them were going at it outside the dressing rooms, but I think you would expect that.

"There was a bit of trash talking going on after the game. When you have a microphone in front of you tend to be a bit more respectful of what, in essence, is your greatest rivals."
