Andy Robertson opens up on Liverpool and Scotland heartbreak as 'desperate' admission made

Andy Robertson has admitted the last 10 days have been the 'toughest' of his footballing career to date after a number of near misses in some huge matches. The left-back captained Scotland as they were beaten by Ukraine 3-1 at Hampden Park in the World Cup play-off on Wednesday night.

Scotland were hoping to take a step closer to their first World Cup since 1998, but it wasn't to be and it'll be a further four year wait after Ukraine superbly fought their way to the match with Wales on Sunday - with the winner heading to Qatar in November.

Just days prior to Wednesday's loss against Ukraine, Robertson tasted defeat in the Champions League final as Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid at the Stade de France - a match in which Robertson played the full 90 minutes.

The 28-year-old spoke to the media after Scotland's loss to Ukraine on Wednesday night: "Personally, it's been the toughest 10 days of my football career, of course it has been. Emotionally, mentally, physically, everything. So it's not been great.

"But to be honest I will deal with that myself, I will go away and think about that myself.

"But I am just gutted for those lads in there. Obviously I was desperate for them to get to a World Cup and play on the biggest stage and unfortunately we have fallen short.

"But we need to be ready the next time it comes around. The way it is with international football, people get older and you never know when your last chance of it will be. That's why it hurts so much."
