Andy Robertson makes Man City admission after Liverpool beat Arsenal

Andy Robertson has admitted he would 'rather be in Man City's position' despite Liverpool closing in on top spot in the Premier League and carrying all the momentum.

Jurgen Klopp's side closed the gap on Pep Guardiola's side to just a single point after a hard-fought victory over Arsenal on Wednesday evening, which marked a ninth consecutive triumph in the division for the Reds.

The all-important fixture in the context of the campaign now comes on April 10 as City host Liverpool, which could well be the match which swings the balance for either side in their relentless pursuit of the Premier League crown.

Robertson played a key role in the Reds' victory over the Gunners, regaining possession in the final third before setting up Roberto Firmino to score, but remained relaxed at the full-time whistle despite helping to pile the pressure on City.

"We knew we could play better, we just had to find the half spaces a bit better and tweak a few things. It worked. We were a lot more dominant in the second half and were more clinical in front of goal," he told Sky Sports.

"It is always good to contribute. I got my head up and saw Bobby ahead. It was a little bit more of a defensive performance tonight as Martinelli and Saka are really hard work, they always want the ball in behind and are looking to take you on."

On the title race, the Scot added: "It was a game in hand. I don't like games in hand too much, I'd much rather have points on the board. Now we're level on games, but I'd still rather be in Man City's position. They have a point advantage and we still need to go to their place. A couple of players said that after their game, and I agree with that.

"They are a point better off and are one of the best teams in the world. It is a sprint to the finish line and we are in the race. A lot of people maybe didn't think we were going to be around January time, but we're definitely in the race. We just need to focus on what we're doing."

Despite Robertson playing down the importance of this win, Thiago Alcantara was fully aware of just how vital these three points could prove to be.

Asked if this victory felt 'especially big' following City's slip-up, the Spaniard responded: "For sure. Now we are depending on us. Before we were just counting City points and we were wishing they would drop some points, and they did it. The gap now is one point and we are now looking forward to our Nottingham Forest game. We just look at ourselves and have to stay hungry, humble and keep pushing."
