Andy Robertson close to stunning record but Trent Alexander-Arnold may break it again

Andy Robertson admits he faces competition from Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold for the Premier League assist record from a defender.

The pair are among the top in their position for assists and Robertson is just six short of the current record held by Leighton Baines [53].

He's closely followed by Alexander-Arnold on 43 and with both full-backs still young, they're sure to surpass Baines' tally sooner rather than later.

The Scotland international says he 'wants to be number one', but conceded his teammate on the opposite flank will have something to say about that.

"When I talk about assists it's always because I feel as if people judge me and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] off them now," he told the BBC.

"I think a couple of my best games this season have been ones where I've not gave assists but it's a good feeling when you do.

"For me, you want to strive for more so of course it's a target that I've got [breaking the record].

"Of course you want to be number one.

"But I know once I get to number one I've got the little Scouser that's going to be behind me that will probably clear me out the park.

"Hopefully I'll get there before him, at least I'll be able to claim it for a couple of months anyway and then he'll take it off me!"

Robertson and Alexander-Arnold have already notched 27 assists between them in all competitions so far this season.

They're among the most attacking full backs in world football, although it is Alexander-Arnold that currently holds the record for the most assists from a defender in a single Premier League season.
