Andy Robertson aims brutal relegation dig at Everton after Liverpool claim derby triumph

Andy Robertson made sure he reminded Everton they are in a relegation scrap after Liverpool defeated their local rivals in Sunday's Merseyside derby.

The left-back gave the Reds the lead with a header from Mohamed Salah's cross in the 62nd minute and Divock Origi confirmed all three Premier League points would be staying at Anfield in the closing stages. The result means Liverpool end the weekend as they started it, one point behind leaders Manchester City.

At the other end of the table, Everton's fears of relegation are growing as they sit 18th, two points behind Burnley, who secured a morale-boosting win over Wolves earlier on Sunday. The good news for the Toffees is they have a game in hand on the Clarets, but there is no denying they are in a dire position.

Robertson was keen to remind Everton of this and harked back to his own time in a relegation scrap with Hull City in a cheeky post-match jibe. "I've been in a relegation battle before, so I know what it's like," the Scotland captain told Sky Sports. "It was tough, we started playing their game and not our own game.

"We weren't at our best. We had to focus on ourselves and be patient and create chances. Everton are fighting for every point they can get. We didn't create anything first half.

"We had to be patient and fortunately we got the goals. My first at the Kop end, it was an amazing feeling, I'm really pleased with all our contributions today and now we've got a tough week ahead."

Robertson's verdict that the derby was "tough" was shared by Jamie Carragher in the studio, but the Anfield legend also tore into the Everton squad for letting their supporters down during a torrid campaign. He said: "The Everton players have been cheating their manager and their fans this season.

"To put in a performance as good as that against one of the best teams in the world at the moment and at one of the hardest places to play football? They made it so difficult for Liverpool and had real fight today. They need to look at themselves because now they're in the bottom three and they have to start fighting for their lives."

Up next for Liverpool is the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Villarreal on Wednesday night before they return to top-flight action with a trip to Newcastle in Saturday's early kick-off. Everton, meanwhile, host Chelsea on Sunday as they aim to haul themselves to safety.
