Andy Murray says he felt “really upset and angry” after his mother Judy recently revealed that she had been sexually assaulted at a function eight years ago.

Top tennis coach Judy recounted her ordeal for the first time in a column for the Sunday Post last month, writing that a drunk man had put his hand down her trousers during a meal at an awards event in which she was due to give an after-dinner speech.

Judy said the incident had “rocked her badly” and left her “feeling sick to my stomach for a long time”.

She also spoke of a different incident at an awards show in 2004 where a joke about her appearance made her feel uncomfortable and led her to reject subsequent social invitations, insisting she now understood that sexism and misogyny must be challenged throughout society.

Asked if he had been aware of the assault and that Judy was going to share her experience, Andy Murray said in an interview with Emma Barnett and Bloomberg: “My brother Jamie was aware of it, I wasn't.

“My mum did message me at the time to let me know that there was an article coming out about it. And yeah, I was obviously really upset for her.

“I was pretty angry, but also I didn't know quite exactly what to say.

“Obviously, I messaged my mum. I called her the following day to talk to her to make sure that she was okay.

“It’s obviously a familiar story for a lot of women, and yeah, that sort of behaviour shouldn’t be tolerated anywhere.”
