Andy Murray splits with coach Ivan Lendl again after tough end to 2023 season

Andy Murray is to split with coach Ivan Lendl after a difficult end to the 2023 season.

The former world No1 has won just two matches in five tournaments since the US Open and, after back-to-back title wins on grass earlier in the summer, has struggled to recapture his best form.

As a result, Murray and Lendl have agreed to end their coach-player relationship for a third time.

The pair started working together at the end of 2011 and, under Lendl’s tutelage, Murray won the US Open, Olympic gold and Wimbledon before a split in 2014.

They resumed the relationship again in 2016 for Murray to win another Wimbledon title and second Olympic gold and reach world No1 before a parting again the following year.

Their latest reunion in 2022 showed flickers of promised but Murray has decided to continue with just Mark Hilton and Jonny O’Mara, who have been part of his day-to-day coaching set-up. He could also add to that coaching team in due course.

Following their split, Murray said: “Ivan has been by my side at the biggest moments in my career and I can’t thank him enough for all that he’s helped me achieve. He’s a unique character, who understands what it takes to win and I’ve learnt an awful lot over the years from him.”

Lendl added: “I will look back with some great memories of the time Andy and I worked together. He’s as hard a worker as there is and the sport is better because of him. I wish him only the best in the years to come."
