Andy Murray pays emotional tribute to gran after Davis Cup win

ANDY Murray delivered an emotional speech after beating Swiss star Leandro Riedi in the Davis Cup, revealing that it was the day of his gran’s funeral.

The Scot saw off Riedi 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 6-4 in the opening singles match in Manchester, with Great Britain now leading Switzerland 1-0 in Group B of the tournament.

But Murray, 36, became teary in his on-court interview as he dedicated his victory to his gran.

Struggling to speak, he said: “Today is a tough day for me. It’s my Gran’s funeral today.”

After apologising to the crowd, he continued: “"I'm sorry to my family that I'm not able to be there. Gran, this one is for you.”

The crowd offered their support with a rapturous round of applause of the three-time Grand Slam champion, who sat with his head under a towel for a few moments before leaving the arena.

Fellow Scot Cameron Norrie will take on former Australian, US and French Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the next singles match before Neal Skupski and Dan Evans star in the doubles.

Great Britain beat Australia earlier in the week while the Swiss lost to France. The top two from the group will qualify for November’s knockout stage in Spain.
