Andy Murray cuts ties with coach Jan de Witt after unsuccessful Australian Open

Andy Murray has dispensed with the services of his short-term coach Jan de Witt on the back of his second-round exit from the Australian Open.

The Scot got off to a strong start in Melbourne, coming through a five-set thriller to upset 21st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round.

But those exertions seemed to take their toll, as he crashed out of the competition in his next outing with a disappointing straight-sets defeat to Japan's Taro Daniel.

His performances Down Under do not appear to have convinced tennis star Murray that he and de Witt are the right fit going forwards.

As the Telegraph first reported, the former world number one has ended his affiliation with the German, who becomes the second coach in three months to fail a trial period with Murray.

The 34-year-old split with long-time coach Jamie Delgado towards the end of last year, and first hired Esteban Carril for a trial.

But that relationship didn't last long, before de Witt was hired for the Mubadala World Tennis Championships exhibition event in December.

Things started well with a run to the final at the Sydney Classic, but his shorter-than-hoped stay in Australia appears to have been the root cause of his decision to move on.

Murray was clearly unhappy with how he had lost, saying after his defeat to Daniel: "Tonight is not good enough. Making the second round of slams is not something I find particularly motivating. I want to be doing better than that."

This latest move is an example of Murray sticking to what he said he planned to do after ending his relationship with Carril in December.

"The decision is an important one for me," the Scot said as he explained his call.

"Obviously I don't know how much longer I'm going to be playing so I want to make sure that the person that's with me for the last period of my career is the right one."

Murray's next competitive outings are due to be at ATP Tour events in the Middle-East in February, and he could have another coach on trial for those tournaments.

Despite something of a resurgence over the past few months, though, there are still suggestions that Murray's days on the tour are numbered as injuries have taken their toll.

Asked after his defeat in Melbourne if he plans to return for the competition in 2023, he simply replied: "Not if I do what I did tonight too often this season."
