Andros Townsend shares Everton injury update and possible return plan

Everton winger Andros Townsend has updated supporters that his recovery from injury is going well, and laid out what the potential plan for his return could be.

The 31-year-old joined the Blues last summer on a free transfer and quickly settled into his new surroundings with a strong start to the campaign, including an incredible goal against Burnley and an important strike against Manchester United at Old Trafford. However, his season was ended early in the club's FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace in March.

He suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury which forced him off in the first half of the game against his former club and has been on the road to recovery since. Townsend stayed around the first team squad throughout the back end of 2021/22 and throughout the summer as he went through his rehabilitation alone.

The winger was recently in Doha receiving treatment at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital. And, speaking to Qatar2022.qa, he explained where he currently stands in the process.

He said: "It’s going well. I’m four months in now, which is probably just over halfway. I came to Qatar to see a specialist, so I’ve had an amazing week here and learned some new things that I will take back to my rehab back in England."

However, Evertonians might still need to wait a little while to see him back on the pitch. Townsend revealed that there is a long period in which he could return to action - depending on whether he opted to "play if safe" or not.

"Anywhere between October and just after the World Cup," he added on a potential timeframe for his return.

"There’s a big window there, where if I want to push it, I could return before the World Cup begins, but if I want to be safe, it would be after the World Cup, so I’m not too sure yet."
