Andrei Kanchelskis has urged Anthony Gordon to follow in the footsteps of Wayne Rooney - and stay at Everton for another season.
Toffees winger Gordon has been the subject of transfer interest from Chelsea, with the London club likely to continue testing the resolve on Merseyside by upping their bid. Blues boss Frank Lampard is desperate not to lose another key attacking asset following the sale of Richarlison to Tottenham and the injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but should Chelsea return with an offer in excess of £50million, it remains to be seen how things would play out.
But ex-Toffees winger Kanchelskis has urged Gordon to follow in the footsteps of another boyhood Evertonian by staying for another season before moving on.

“Gordon is a great player. He's like Rooney, a younger player for Everton,” Kanchelskis told OLBG . “Chelsea are interested in him. I think he should stay this season at Everton then move to another club next season like Rooney did. Rooney stayed for one or two seasons then moved. If Gordon stays and wants to play over money, he will be a good player, that is very important for all young players.”
Lampard has urged patience among the blue half of Merseyside after Everton kicked off the season with back-to-back defeats, citing a number of new arrivals and key injuries as explanation for a slow start.
Kanchelskis is taking an optimistic approach to the new season, with the former Russian international backing Everton to kick on and climb into the top 10.
“They have a new coach in Lampard, it's a good job for him,” the former Toffee added. “Hopefully they will make it back to the top seven, it's important for them. Everton are a big team with great fans who always help. Lampard needs some time, but he will take Everton up the table. Lampard is the right manager for the club. I've watched some of their games and I can see good signs.
“I hope Everton are back in the top half soon. Last season was a very bad season. Lampard's job is to get them back into the top 10. I think it's definitely this season where Lampard gets Everton back into the top 10. Everton need a new striker. Maybe they might sign one. Maybe they should get Duncan Ferguson up front again!”
