Andrea Pirlo highlights James Maddison-alternative for Newcastle United who could benefit Bruno

Italian legend Andrea Pirlo may have given Newcastle United the perfect alternative to James Maddison, should the Magpies decide to move on from the England international.

Newcastle United wish to bolster their midfield options this summer, with their pursuit of James Maddison well-known. But with Leicester City demanding a high fee, and with Tottenham also interested, Newcastle may be forced to look at alternative options to strengthen their midfield.

AC Milan and Italy international midfielder Sandro Tonali is one name who has been mentioned as a potential alternative, and he certainly has the backing of Italian midfield legend Pirlo. The midfield maestro previously backed Tonali to thrive in any top team, with the high praise sure to warrant the attention of Newcastle's chiefs.

Pirlo said of the 23-year-old: "He has everything to be a champion but he is more a midfielder for a two-man midfield. He could already play for a great team; he is the best in this league." He has also earned the praise of Italian National Team head coach Roberto Mancini who described him as "incredibly gifted".

And as far as Newcastle are concerned, Pirlo's comments in particular could highlight why he would be both the perfect alternative for Maddison, but also a great partner in Eddie Howe's midfield for Brazilian star Bruno Guimaraes.

In 34 Serie A appearances last season, the midfielder matched up really well with Bruno in numerous key midfield attributes such relating to both attacking and defensive actions, proving himself and all-rounded midfield player that could make him the perfect foil in allowing Howe to really unleash Bruno next season.
