Anas Sarwar was first elected as an MP at Westminster in the 2010 General Election. He had been selected to run in Glasgow Central in the place of his retiring father, millionaire businessman Mohammad Sarwar.
In the 2015 General Election, Sarwar lost the seat to the SNP’s Alison Thewliss.

Sarwar's father, Mohammad Sarwar, became the UK’s first ever Muslim MP when he won the Glasgow Govan seat in the 1997 general election.
Mohammed Sarwar and his brother founded United Wholesale (Scotland) after he moved to Scotland from Pakistan in the 1970s.
The family business is a “cash and carry” business which supplies a range of products, from frozen food items to tobacco and grocery.
Its depots are located in several places, including in Pollokshields and on the M9 between Grangemouth and Falkirk.
The firm was in the headlines last year after Anas Sarwar claimed it does not pay all of its workers the real living wage.
He was questioned on the BBC’s Sunday Show, during which he said: “I don’t believe that every single staff member is on the real living wage.”
The union representing the workers, however, insisted that the workers are paid at least the real living wage.
