Analyzing the terms of Dolphins RB Raheem Mostert’s new contract

The Miami Dolphins put forth a concerted effort to bring back their running back room from the 2022 season, and they succeeded, re-signing all four backs that were set to be free agents.

That list includes running back Raheem Mostert, who had the best season of his career in 2023 – his first with the Dolphins but not his first with head coach Mike McDaniel.

According to Over the Cap, Mostert and the Dolphins agreed to a two-year contract worth $5.6 million.

In 2023, he’ll make $1.165 million in base salary ($900,000 of which is guaranteed), $650,000 in a prorated signing bonus, $290,000 in per-game roster bonuses and $100,000 in workout bonuses. His cap hit for 2023 is set to be roughly $2.2 million.

The following year, Mostert will earn $2.355 million in base salary (none guaranteed), $650,000 in a prorated signing bonus, $290,000 in per-game roster bonuses and $100,000 in workout bonuses. His cap hit for 2024 is set to be about $3.4 million.

Those numbers are more than reasonable for a back that’s been as efficient as Mostert has. General manager Chris Grier and cap guru Brandon Shore have given themselves an out as well if Mostert falls off or deals with injuries in 2023. They can cut him before 2024 and save $2.745 of the $3.4 million, incurring only $650,000 in dead cap.

While there were rumors of higher-priced backs coming to Miami, this move, and the ones that followed to fill the room, make much more sense.
