The Miami Dolphins have been extremely active in the last month, making a number of moves to improve their offense and keep a good amount of their defense together.
One member of Miami’s defensive unit that was brought back was linebacker Brennan Scarlett.
Scarlett, 29, came to the Dolphins last offseason after spending the first five years of his career with the Houston Texans. In his first season with Miami, Scarlett was a key contributor on special teams, playing 77% of snaps, and helped a bit on defense, playing 19% of snaps.
This offseason, Scarlett signed a one-year contract to return to Miami that’s worth $1.175 million. The deal has $40,000 guaranteed in a signing bonus and another $450,000 guaranteed of his total $1.035 million base salary. He also has a $100,000 roster bonus.
With the way this contract is set up, if the Dolphins were to release Scarlett before the start of the season, they would only save $555,000 and incur $490,000 in dead cap. That likely means that Scarlett will make the team and continue his role as a core special teamer.
