Analyzing Bears’ final injury report for Week 6 against Vikings

The Chicago Bears released their final injury report ahead of Sunday’s Week 6 matchup against the division-rival Minnesota Vikings.

The Bears are banged up, especially at running back, as they’ll be without their top two options in Khalil Herbert (ankle) and rookie Roschon Johnson (concussion). There are a couple of other notable players who have already been ruled out.

On the Vikings side, they’re heading into this game relatively healthy as running back Kene Nwangwu is questionable with a back injury. The big loss, of course, is receiver Justin Jefferson, who landed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury earlier this week.

Here’s a look at the Bears’ final injury report heading into Sunday’s game with analysis:

Out

  • RB Khalil Herbert (ankle)
  • RB Roschon Johnson (concussion)
  • CB Terell Smith (ankle/illness)
  • WR Equanimeous St. Brown (hamstring)
  • RB Travis Homer (hamstring)

Chicago will be without three running backs as Herbert, Johnson and Homer have already been ruled out for Sunday’s game against Minnesota. Luckily, the Bears have D’Onta Foreman ready to step into that workhorse role, and they recently signed Darrynton Evans, who was on the roster last year, to serve as support. Elsewhere, Smith has been declared out with an ankle/illness. But the team is getting back some key starters for this game, so it’s not a huge blow. St. Brown, who suffered a hamstring injury last week, has also been ruled out.

Questionable

  • S Eddie Jackson (foot)
  • C Lucas Patrick (concussion)

Jackson has missed the last three games with a foot injury, but he returned to practice in limited fashion this week. Jackson appears to be good to go, but it sounds like he’ll be a game-time decision. Patrick, who suffered a concussion in last week’s game, was listed as a full participant in practice, an indication he’s out of concussion protocol. We’ll see if he’ll be available come Sunday.

  • CB Jaylon Johnson (hamstring)
  • CB Kyler Gordon (hand)
  • TE Cole Kmet (hamstring)
  • C Doug Kramer (thumb)

While there are some big losses on the injury report, the Bears are getting some big breaks in the secondary with the returns of Johnson and Gordon. Technically, Gordon needs to be activated from IR before Sunday, but all indications are that’ll be the case. Kmet was a surprise addition to the injury report this week with a hamstring injury, but he was a full participant Friday and is good to go. Kramer, also designated to return from IR, has been a full participant all week and should also be back.

On injured reserve/PUP list

LT Braxton Jones: Jones suffered a neck injury in the Bears’ Week 2 loss to the Bucs, and he was placed on injured reserve this week. Jones will miss at least the next four games and is eligible to return in Week 7 against the Raiders. Matt Eberflus wouldn’t say if it’s a season-ending injury.

*CB Kyler Gordon: Gordon suffered a hand injury in Chicago’s Week 1 loss, which landed him on injured reserve. He’ll miss at least the next four games and is eligible to return in Week 6 against the Vikings.

CB Josh Blackwell: Blackwell was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. He’s required to miss at least the next four games and can return in Week 8 against the Chargers.

*C Doug Kramer: Kramer, like Jenkins, landed on IR with an undisclosed injury. He will miss the first four games and can return in Week 5 against Washington.

DL Khalid Kareem: Kareem was placed on IR with a hip injury. He’ll miss at least four games and is eligible to return in Week 7 against the Raiders.

*designated to return from IR
