Tight end has been one of the more notable underperforming spots for the Cincinnati Bengals by the bye week.
New starter Irv Smith Jr. already missed time with an injury after coming over via free agency and few others at the spot have been able to get involved.
With the trade deadline looming, For The Win’s Cory Woodroof looked at one trade target for each team and identified Darren Waller of the New York Giants as a fit:
“Waller is stuck on a Giants team is going nowhere in a hurry, and he’s just too talented to get stuck in New York. If the Giants would be willing to move Waller for a pick, Cincinnati should pick up the phone and make this happen.”
Waller, 31, is in his first year with the Giants and has 28 catches with no scores over six games. He’d be a half-season rental for the Bengals, given the out built into his contract after this year.
While adding a 6’6″ target sounds great, Waller would resemble a risk given his last trip above 600 yards was 2021 and his last season with more than three receiving touchdowns was 2020.
Still, this is in line with what the Bengals might want to consider looking at before the deadline — an affordable player at the spot who can be a quality receiving threat.
