Sala Sudasiri Sobha is hosting an evening of flute and piano with classical music from various eras, from a sonata of the late Baroque period to a cutting-edge new flute piece, on Sunday at 4pm.
Highlights of the programme include Sonata In E Major composed in the 1740s by Bach for Michael Gabriel Fredersdorf, who was Frederick the Great's secretary.
Many composers from the Baroque period wrote pieces for Frederick the Great as he was an amateur flautist. All these pieces hold a certain charm and this sonata for his secretary is no different.
Another highlight will be Sonata For Flute And Piano by Eldin York Bowen, a very individualistic romantic English composer who wrote more than 160 pieces. He dedicated this sonata to Gareth Morris who was a prolific flautist in England. Nowadays, the piece is not played regularly.
Also featured in the repertoire will be Gaubert's Nocturne And Allegro Scherzando For Flute And Piano, Offermans's Homani, Burton's Sonatina For Flute And Piano, Chopin's Ballade No.3 for Solo Piano In A-Flat Major, and Taffanel's Fantasy On The Themes Of "Freishütz".
The evening recital will be performed by two young talented players -- Chonchanok Sophonpanich (flute) and Aaron Stewart (piano). They met at the Purcell School for Young Musicians in Bushey, England, and have played at prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Saint John Smith's Square.
Chonchanok won second place in the Siam Ratchada Flute Competition and the second audience prize in the British Flute Society Young Performer Category. Aaron, meanwhile, won the first prize in the Wales International Harp Competition and first prize in the North London Harp Society Competition.
