An Artist Was Told the Blindness She Experienced After a Skin Treatment Was Only Temporary. Her Sight Never Returned

An artist took to social media to issue a warning after she underwent a skin treatment that caused permanent blindness in one of her eyes.

Esther Jeong shared in a TikTok video that she recently received a Juvelook Volume injection to stimulate undereye collagen from a doctor in Korea. During the procedure, she lost vision in one eye but was assured it would return. However, after multiple hospital visits and experimental treatments, her vision has yet to return.

"Anything I focus on, whenever I move my eye, it's like completely erased. It has been so traumatic, it's been a nightmare," Jeong explained. "Because, as you know, I'm a designer, and I'm a ceramic artist, and my livelihood is based off of what I see."

⚠️ This patient lost vision in one eye after getting Juvalook in Korea. It’s heartbreaking and it’s why we take complications seriously. In this video, I explain how this could’ve been prevented with proper technique, and how acting fast is critical when it comes to vascular occlusions. Most importantly, what to do immediately if things go wrong. There’s a small window to reverse it, and timing makes all the difference. Education. Timing. Experience. These things matter. 🙌🏼 Comment your questions down below! ⬇️ #juvalook #fillercomplications #vascularocclusion #fyp #balancelabaesthetics #orangecountymedspa

Annie Kim, a certified esthetician who goes by @anniekim_fnp, explained in a follow-up TikTok video that the injection "compromised the blood supply and actually caused damage to the organ and the tissue" around Jeong's eye.

Jeong is seeking compensation for the permanent damage that caused her to lose her vision, which is especially devastating since her livelihood as an artist depends on sight. She hopes her story will serve as a cautionary tale for others considering similar cosmetic treatments.

"I think people go to Korea and do all these skin treatments thinking that it's like an easy and quick thing. And that's what I thought, too, even though I did research for over a year and thought it was safe," she revealed. "But something like this happened. I became a statistic somehow," Jeong added.
