Welsh professional dancer Amy Dowden has quickly become one of the most popular professional dancers on the BBC One show Strictly Come Dancing. The star currently has her own show on BBC Wales, where she is helping others learn to dance, and despite loving presenting says she would never want to leave Strictly.
Amy's show, Dare to Dance, see's her teaching people to dance for a special performance in front of their family and friends and to have their "moment". These people can be amazing members of the community and all deserve their moment to shine.
In the show which was all filmed in Wales, as well as acting as a dance teacher Amy is also the presenter, an experience she said she "loved" when we chatted to her about Dare to Dance. It was clear while Amy was talking about Dare to Dance she was full of passion and very proud of the show. She said: “It was a really emotional journey full of happiness, happy tears, excitement, pride. It was a real journey and it was so lovely to get to know them and their families and for them to have their moment.”
Amy also admitted that sometimes she can be guilty of working too hard and that not every dance routine needs to be perfect for it to be special and meaningful. She said: “I can be guilty of it as well, never giving time to myself always being work, work, work, work...It made me realise as well this wasn’t about creating the most special, best dance routine or dance ever, it was about creating their moment to celebrate them and their lives. It wasn’t a competition, it was just something to celebrate them.”
The star also loved being back in Wales to film the show, which sees the dancers attend the same dance school she did when she was younger. She said: “Loved it…it was just so lovely to be home, in my Welsh roots using the dance school. It is a full circle using the dance school, all the contributors went there, got taught there and their costumes fitting. They had the exact same experience that I did as a dancer and I love that…it just makes me burst with pride!”
Dare to Dance airs on BBC Wales and all episodes are available to watch on iPlayer.
