Amy Broadhurst buys first house after finally receiving €102,000 prize money for World Championship win

World Champion boxer Amy Broadhurst has bought her first house after finally receiving the €102,855 prize money she earned by winning the world title five months ago.

Broadhurst along with Lisa O'Rourke both won gold for Ireland at the World Championships back in May. After a lengthy delay, both fighters have at last received their winnings awarded by the International Boxing Association (IBA).

This year's world championship was the first in history to have a cash prize on offer. Despite the prolonged delay, the IBA continuously insisted that proper procedures were being followed and that the money would be paid once these procedures had been adhered to.

In an interview published on the IBA website earlier today, Broadhurst confirmed she had received the money and has already plans in place to put the cash to good use.

" I bought my first house with this prize money, " said the 25-year-old, " To own a house at my age is a great achievement, and I’m very proud of this. I also will have a shopping spree but other than that the rest will go to my savings.

The Dundalk woman has been boxing her entire life. The sport is ingrained in the Broadhurst family, with all three of her brothers having also boxed. Her father trained them all, and is still to this day Amy's coach.

" My dad still trains me now. He is the reason I have made the Irish team," she says.

" I started off in Dealgan boxing club in my hometown. When I first joined it was run down, very small, and didn’t have any facilities for women. But as I grew older and more women started to box, faculties were added, and also the boxing gym grew bigger. "

It's been a sensational year inside the ring for the County Louth woman. A Commonwealth Games gold medal to go along with the World Championship top prize has seen Broadhurst ascend to the upper echelons of the sport.

" This has been the best year of my life.

" It was a great achievement to win a Commonwealth gold medal, but since I was a little girl, I always dreamt of a World Championships gold medal. To finally achieve one of my dreams is an amazing feeling and something that I will keep with me forever. "

Broadhurst is currently in Montenegro with an Irish team that includes Olympic Gold medalist Kellie Harrington, preparing for the European Elite Women’s Championship which begins tomorrow. O'Rourke misses out with a thumb injury and is therefore not in the draw for the tournament which takes place on Thursday.
