In Amsterdam’s Red Light District, a hologram of a woman has been created to seek justice for a young Hungarian sex worker, Bernadett “Betty” Szabó, who was tragically murdered in 2009. The hologram, modeled after Szabó, appears in a window, knocking and breathing on the glass with the word “help” fogging up the glass.
Betty Szabó, who grew up in poverty in Hungary, moved to Amsterdam at the age of 18 to work as a prostitute. Despite becoming pregnant and giving birth to a son, she continued her work until her life was brutally taken in her workroom, where she was found stabbed dozens of times.
Despite extensive investigations by the Dutch police, the case remained unsolved, prompting the creation of the holographic representation of Szabó in the hopes of encouraging potential witnesses to come forward with new information.
Benjamin van Gogh, coordinator of the Amsterdam Wanted and Missing Persons Team, emphasized the importance of putting a face to the victim to encourage informants to share any relevant details. The hologram serves as a poignant reminder of Betty’s life and the quest for justice in her case.
Amsterdam Police, in collaboration with Szabó’s family, are committed to pursuing justice with dignity and are offering a reward of €30,000 for information leading to the resolution of the case. Eline Roovers, a police spokesperson, highlighted the significance of potential witnesses coming forward, as research indicates that individuals who commit such crimes often confide in others.
As Amsterdam attracts visitors from across the globe, the police are urging anyone who may have information related to Betty Szabó’s murder, especially those who were in the city in February 2009, to come forward and assist in bringing closure to this tragic case.
