Amsterdam is introducing a new range of rules for holidaymakers heading to the city.
The popular travel destination is well known for it's legal cannabis use and brothels. But if you plan on visiting the Dutch city on a weekend, you may be in for a shock as there will be restrictions on what you can do.
Amsterdam would like to become a cultural destination rather than a party city. As a result, a ‘stay away’ campaign is due to be launched next year.

This is expected to see limits on the opening hours of bars and clubs as well as the brothels in the Red Light District. There are also plans to stop selling weed on weekends while alcohol and cannabis consumption could be banned in certain areas of Amsterdam.
Airbnbs and short-term holiday lets could also face stricter rules and owners could be encouraged to turn them into homes for residents. There could also be a tourist tax levied against visitors to the city at busy times in the future.
Sofyan Mbarki, Amsterdam’s deputy mayor, said: “If we have to love the city, we have to act now. It has become clear that everyone cares about the city and that intervention is needed to counter the nuisance and overcrowding.
“If we want effective and forward-looking cooperation, both a long-term vision and appropriate measures are needed. Amsterdam is a metropolis and that means a lively and bustling city, but to keep our city liveable, we now have to opt for limits instead of irresponsible growth.”
All the proposals are due to be put to Amsterdam’s city council on December 21 for discussion.
