Amsterdam is planning on bringing in tough measures for tourists visiting the city, which is known for it’s legal cannabis use and brothels. A destination associated with partying, it’s introducing new rules in an effort to crack down on “nuisance and overcrowding”.
The city aims to ditch its party reputation and become a cultural destination instead. To help make this happen a campaign will be introduced in 2023. It’s expected to restrict the opening hours of bars and clubs as well as the brothels in the Red Light District, Liverpool Echo reports.
Included in the campaign are plans to stop the sale of cannabis on weekends and even banning the consumption of cannabis in certain areas of Amsterdam. Stricter rules could be in place for Airbnbs and short-term holiday lets, with owners encouraged to turn them into homes for residents.

Tourists could also be taxed when visiting the city at busy times in the future. Sofyan Mbarki, Amsterdam’s deputy mayor, said: “If we have to love the city, we have to act now.
“It has become clear that everyone cares about the city and that intervention is needed to counter the nuisance and overcrowding. If we want effective and forward-looking cooperation, both a long-term vision and appropriate measures are needed.
“Amsterdam is a metropolis and that means a lively and bustling city, but to keep our city liveable, we now have to opt for limits instead of irresponsible growth.” All the proposals are due to be put to Amsterdam’s city council on December 21 for discussion.
