Amorim Tells Manchester United Board To Sign Gyokeres

Ruben Amorim has reportedly told Manchester United chiefs that he cannot wait until the summer to sign Viktor Gyokeres from his previous club Sporting Lisbon.

The Swedish international has been in blistering form this season scoring 27 goals in as many appearances.

He has been linked with a move to Manchester United ever since Amorim made the switch from Sporting to Old Trafford in November.

Amorim initially denied suggestions he would try to sign one of his former players in the near-future when he became United manager.

However, after a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, reports suggest otherwise.

Ruben Amorim ‘Wants United To Sign Gyokeres In January’

Manchester United currently have an issue in forward positions, with the club struggling for goals and sitting 14th in the table.

Marcus Rashford has told the media that he is ready for a fresh challenge. Ruben Amorim admitted that summer signing Joshua Zirkzee is ‘struggling’ amid reports linking him with a move back to Italy.

The Daily Star now report that Amorim has informed Manchester United bosses that acquiring Gyokeres this month is a necessity.

Amorim joined Coventry in a £20m deal in the summer of 2023 after their Championship play-off final defeat to Luton Town.

However, a release clause in Gyokeres’ contract at Sporting means a move would set Manchester United back £80m.

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that United will need to offload players before they are able to make signings.

In addition to the attacking positions, the side are in desperate need of wing backs to fit Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

So United could have to look to clear players like Rashford, Zirkzee or Casemiro – who reportedly wants to leave – before they can sign a player of Gyokeres’ value.

United’s Struggles

Manchester United’s top scorers are Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford with four goals.

Their 2-0 loss to Newcastle saw the Red Devils fall within seven points of the relegation zone in 14th place.

It doesn’t get much easier for United with their upcoming fixtures. They face leaders Liverpool on Sunday before an FA Cup third-round clash against Arsenal at the Emirates.

United look to be on course for their first bottom-half finish in the Premier League era. If Manchester United were able to sign a player of the level of Gyokeres, it would give them a real boost heading into the second-half of the season.
