Amit Panghal, two others get notice for indiscipline

NEW DELHI: Three elite boxers - 2019 World Championships silver medallist Amit Panghal (51kg), Birmingham CWG silver winner Sagar Ahlawat (+92kg) and 2021 national champion Rohit Mor (57kg) - have been issued show cause notices by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) for leaving the national camp in NIS Patiala without informing the authorities, TOI has learnt.

All three have been expelled from the camp for their offence and the federation has sought an explanation from them.

The incident occurred on September 4, a day prior to their departure for the Asian Games preparatory camp in China.

The three are on the reserve list of players for the Asiad in case an injury happens to boxers in their respective weight categories. Deepak Bhoria (51kg), Sachin (57kg) and Narender (+92kg) have been named in the seven-member men's boxing squad.

In a statement to TOI, BFI informed: "On 4th September, three boxers - Amit Panghal 51kg, Rohit Mor 57kg and Sagar +92kg - left the national coaching camp without any prior approval or prior permission of coach/head coach/federation.

This is in gross violation of the regulations followed by the BFI. In addition, this was a very critical time when boxers cannot be missing and must keep the federation informed about their whereabouts due to regulations by the National Anti-Doping Agency/World Anti-Doping Agency... They were also supposed to leave for the Asian Games pre-training camp from Delhi for China on 5th September 2023.

"The federation has taken a serious view of this gross violation and poor discipline exhibited by these three boxers. As per the procedures, all three were issued show cause on 6th September to explain as to why they took this action of indiscipline and violated the athletes' code of conduct," the statement read.
