Amir Khan defends wearing expensive jewellery as he admits wife hates it after robbery

Amir Khan has defended wearing expensive jewellery after being robbed at gunpoint - as he admits his wife hates it.

The boxer feared he would die when he was robbed of his £72,000 watch in a terrifying gunpoint robbery in London recently, and he has since defended his decision to wear such expensive items in public.

However, Amir admits his wife Faryal is not keen on him wearing these types of items, as she described the devastating events as "a really big wake up call". The pair have urged London Mayor Sadiq Khan to do more to help reduce the crime rate in the capital.

Asked how he feels about wearing expensive items out in public, he said: "Me and Faryal were talking about that. I'll let you answer that because she's really against me wearing stuff like that."

"You work hard so you should be able to treat yourself but, I think Amir sometimes forgets that he could get targeted," she added.

"You never think this would happen to you, so it's a really big wake up call," Faryal explained about her own worries, "I don't think you can really walk the streets of London wearing expensive things."

Amir was still in London for a few days after and he admits he was "very scared".

He added: "Even after it happened, I was in London for another two days and I was walking around and was really scared. I think, I've not got a watch on me now if someone comes at me in the alley way.

"I do feel very unsafe in London, England because it is very dangerous out there."

Faryal is glad that Amir stepped away from the robber, rather than confront the person.

The pair spoke to GMB hosts Kate Garraway and Kevin Bacon about being held at gunpoint (ITV)

"I think Amir did the right thing by stepping away. So I think I did the right thing by screaming and saying there's a gun and running off and getting help," she said as Amir admitted he was happy she ran away, before she added: "I couldn't fight the gunman, I couldn't stand in front and get shot. My first instinct was keeping Amir safe and of course, my kids."

The police have begun investigating the matter, and in a recent statement, a spokesperson shared: "At this very early stage there have been no arrests. An investigation has begun and police are following a number of enquiries."
