Amir Khan calls out Floyd Mayweather for exhibition days after announcing retirement

Amir Khan has staked his claim to fight Floyd Mayweather after telling the ring legend he needs a "real challenge" for his next exhibition venture.

The British star announced his retirement from boxing just weeks ago after losing to bitter rival Kell Brook in April. Closing the chapter after 27 years in the sport, Khan insisted he was done with fighting but has backtracked after calling for an exhibition bout with Mayweather.

Speaking after Mayweather's exhibition against Don Moore last weekend, Khan told Aziz DXB: "We saw the event today, I think Floyd needs a real challenge. We should do it. 100 per cent guys, let's make it happen. I'm calling him out. Either hit me up or hit my brother [Tam Khan] up."

Mayweather, 45, has competed in three exhibitions since retiring from boxing in 2017. Khan, who revealed that Mayweather asked him to delay his retirement when the pair met in Dubai, admitted that he would break his retirement to fight 'Money' for entertainment purposes.

"Look, exhibitions always happen," Khan told talkSPORT. "I met Floyd the other day in Dubai and there was some excitement there, he was like 'don't retire, let's do something, there's something we can do'.

"I was like 'maybe if it didn't happen when we were both professional fighters, maybe it can happen as an exhibition'. No one wins, it's just a bit of fun to give the fans a bit of entertainment.

"I think now with boxing, it's totally changed now where a lot of these fights happen, social media guys fight each other, and a new door's been opened. People can just step in after a week of training and have a fight!"

Khan stepped in the ring for the first time in three years when he was stopped by bitter rival Brook in Manchester. He admitted that the danger of staying in boxing for too long was part of his decision and something he always feared during his accomplished career,

"You’re only one punch away from getting hurt, knocked out or killed," he added. "While I’ve got the chips on my side, I’m happy to walk away and call it a day.

"You’re always one punch away from getting hurt, that’s something I was always scared of, I wouldn’t be there for the kids. There’s no point making all this money and you don’t enjoy it.”
