American woman visiting UK boyfriend killed looking right instead of left crossing road

An American woman visiting her British boyfriend was killed crossing the road as she was looking the wrong way, an inquest was told.

Selena Mystera Meyers and Stephen Buckley started a transatlantic romance after meeting online in 2016.

Tragedy struck in January 2021 when the 23-year-old came to visit him in Eccles, Manchester, as she crossed a road and was hit by two cars.

The drivers of the vehicles said Selena was looking to her right, as she would to cross safely in the US, but traffic drives on the other side of the road in Britain, Manchester Evening News reported.

As a result she was hit by a Skoda, followed by a Renault Clio, the court heard.

The Clio driver told proceedings: “She seemed to be looking the wrong way.

"This made sense when I found out she was American.

"I know this because I've done it myself when I've been abroad - looking in the wrong direction for traffic."

The Clio driver and her front-seat passenger told the inquest they simply did not see Selena as she was crossing the road, which has lighting on only one side.

As a result, the driver did not brake with black box data fitted for her insurance company and retrieved from her car revealing she was driving 30mph when tragedy struck.

Stephen said the couple met talking in internet chatrooms in 2016 after being introduced by a friend.

He said: "We used to speak on a regular basis and talked every other day.

"Over a period of time there was a mutual attraction, even though we hadn't met physically.

“This increased over time and the conversations would grow and we could talk about anything.

“In 2018 I asked her to be my girlfriend and I was overjoyed when she said yes."

In July 2019, Stephen visited Selena in Tennessee and met her grandparents, Donald and Florence Lee.

He added: "The time we spent together was magical.”

A statement previously released on behalf of the family said: "My first beautiful daughter, quiet, sweet and loving - a good daughter.

"She was an artist with an empathetic and kind soul, always creating, singing, painting and a writer of books and poetry.

"She always did charity work and was a loyal friend to Elizabeth Grogan - they were the best of friends through thick and thin all the years of her life.

"She lived with and was cared for by her great grandparents, Donald and Florence Lee up until she became a young lady.

"Her name Selena meant Moon Goddess - Mystara meant my stars.

"So she takes our moon and stars from us as she goes.

“RIP my entire night sky - my first baby girl."
